A humidor is a promise: buy good cigars, keep them well, and they will reward you. But not every cigar deserves a place in it. Here are the profiles worth making room for — and how to keep them there.
What earns a place
Look for oily, well-constructed wrappers, a firm but giving draw, and flavor that develops in thirds rather than arriving all at once. Maduro wrappers bring cocoa and cedar; lighter Connecticut shades bring cream and hay.
Store them right
Keep your humidor at roughly 70 degrees and 70 percent humidity. Season a new humidor before loading it, rotate stock every few months, and rest new arrivals for at least two weeks before judging them.
